In addition, Irish craftsmen developed a flourishing metal industry, fashioning a variety of gold, bronze and copper objects. This era also witnessed a significant growth in trade between Ireland and Britain, as well as Northern Europe including Germany and the Nordic countries. The Iron Age in Ireland roughly BCE , characterized by the production iron tools and weapons, was heavily influenced in its final centuries from roughly BCE onwards by the arrival of the Celts who were master goldsmiths and blacksmiths. Their arts and crafts belong however to the more elaborate and curvilinear idiom of La Tene Celtic art , which superceded the earlier Hallstatt culture. It was these Celtic designs – notably the Celtic spiral designs , the intricate Celtic interlace patterns and of course the Celtic crosses – that would inspire the next three major achievements in Irish visual art. Thus, despite regular trade with Roman Britain, the country became a haven for the uninterrupted development of Celtic art and crafts, which were neither displaced by Greco-Roman art, nor destroyed in the ensuing “Dark Ages” c. This led to an unbroken tradition of Celtic culture which retained its own oral, historical and mythological traditions, as exemplified in the Lebor Gabala Erenn Book of Invasions. It was this Celtic culture with its tradition of metallurgical craftsmanship and carving skills, see Celtic Weapons art that was responsible for the second great achievement of Irish art: Articles Wanted If you are a full-time artist with a view on the working and effectiveness of government support for visual arts in Ireland painting, sculpture or public artworks , we would like to hear from you, with a view to commissioning an article.

The history of Ireland could be described with some justification as a sad catalogue of invasion upon invasion, of petty tribal infighting between each successive group, providing the opportunity for the next invaders who were usually better armed and more experienced in warfare, to gain a foothold. This lack of cohesiveness and tendency towards personal material enhancement appears to have been the ultimate downfall of almost all of Irelands invaders, as they fought among themselves, and with previously arrived groups to control the land.

In many of these conflicts the main protagonists were related by blood or marriage, to give three prime examples, the battle of Clontarf, the invasions of Edward and Robert the Bruce and the battle of the Boyne. The Irish nation of today is descended from a rich cultural and genealogical mixture of all these peoples, who came conquered and in the fullness of time integrated, giving rise to the phrase ‘More Irish than the Irish themselves.

Our sources were many and often presented conflicting accounts, as of course is only to be expected. It is difficult for authors to avoid applying his or her own personal political and religious allegiance to the interpretation of events and situations they are describing.

It has been estimated that from to about four million Irish immigrated to the United States.

The language is often described in its earliest form… The hybridity of Irish literature in English After the literatures of Greek and Latin, literature in Irish is the oldest literature in Europe, dating from the 4th or 5th century ce. Irish writing is, despite its unique national and linguistic characteristics, inevitably intertwined with English literature, and this relationship has led frequently to the absorption of Irish writers and texts into the canon of English literature.

Many of the best-known Irish authors lived and worked for long periods in exile, often in England, and this too has contributed to a sense of instability in the development of a canon defined as uniquely Irish. But during the 20th century—particularly after the partition and partial independence of Ireland in —22—scholars reclaimed these writers and their works for Ireland.

This shift can be seen in the changing use of the term Anglo-Irish literature, which at one time referred to the whole body of Irish writing in English but is now used to describe literature produced by, and usually about, members of the Anglo-Irish Protestant Ascendancy of the 18th century. Since the 17th century, Irish society has also simultaneously been a colonial one and an independent, national one.

That hybridity has been the source of endless cultural tension in Irish writing, which has repeatedly coalesced around four issues:

Are you sick of boring dates? Bored by the commitment and expectations of conventional dating? Perhaps you have a wild side that needs exploring or you are just turned on by meeting new partners regularly?

In later years, especially in the second half of the nineteenth century, it was common to assign the term Scotch-Irish to these Ulster Protestant immigrants, although they thought of themselves as strictly Irish.

Up until the year , Provincial Grand Lodges met in a number of Provinces throughout the island of Ireland, but most of these had come into existence, at different times, and were not integrated into a cohesive whole. After much consideration, it was agreed that the Island of Ireland should be divided into thirteen separate Provinces and that the City of Dublin, the County of Dublin and the town of Bray shall not be included in any Masonic Province, but shall continue under the superintendence of the Grand Lodge of Ireland.

Our Irish Constitution, within the Island of Ireland was divided into thirteen Provincial territories, as follows: The City of Londonderry, the County of Londonderry excepting thereout the Town of Magherafelt shall still, as heretofore meet at the City of Londonderry. The previous designations of South Antrim and North Antrim shall be abolished. For those interested in these historical snippets, it is interesting to note that in , Londonderry was acknowledged to be a City whereas Belfast is described as a Town.

The Irish Free State Constitution[ edit ] Irish Free State passport cover as issued holder’s name removed ‘Request’ page of the Irish Free State passport as issued in Irish citizenship originates from Article 3 of the Constitution of the Irish Free State which came into force on 6 December , however Irish citizenship applied only domestically until the enactment of the Twenty-sixth Amendment on 5 April which applied it internationally.

The Article also stated that “the conditions governing the future acquisition and termination of citizenship in the Irish Free State [ While the Constitution referred to those domiciled"in the area of the jurisdiction of the Irish Free State”, this was interpreted as meaning the entire island. The two Houses exercised that right within two days of the Constitution coming into force on 6 December However, the Irish authorities repeatedly rejected the idea that its citizens had the additional status of"British subject”.

The reference to ‘common citizenship’ in the Oath means little or nothing. There is not, in fact, ‘common citizenship’ throughout the British Commonwealth: Using an Irish Free State passport abroad, if consular assistance from a British Embassy was required, could lead to administrative difficulties. Irish Nationality and Citizenship Act [ edit ] The Constitution provided for citizenship for only those alive on 6 December No provision was made for those born after this date.

As such it was a temporary provision which required the enactment of a fully-fledged citizenship law which was done by the Irish Nationality and Citizenship Act This Act provided for, among other things: Irish citizenship by birth for anyone born within the Irish Free State on or after 6 December ; Irish citizenship by descent for anyone whose father was an Irish citizen at the time of his or her birth, provided such birth was registered in register of Northern-Ireland- or foreign births; a naturalisation procedure; and automatic denaturalisation for anyone who became a citizen of another country on or after reaching 21 years of age.
